Free Culture

I had no idea that Steamboat Willie was a direct parody of Steamboat Bill Jr. Borrowing was nothing unique because many other early cartoons are also filled with knockoffs, slight variations on winning themes, retelling of ancient stories.
Steamboat Willie (1929)
Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928)
Disney ripped creativity from the culture around him, mixed that creativity with his own extraordinary talent, and then burned that mix into the soul of his culture.
